Attorneys’ Fees – Gaining Control Over Your Legal Fees
Traditional lawyer billing involves billing for services by the time spent on rendering that service, known as hourly billing. If you are facing a divorce or paternity action, not knowing how much it will cost you to solve the problem adds to the emotional stress of these cases.
On the other hand, for lawyers, one of the scariest things is committing to working on a case for a set fee, and then having that case become litigated and require way more time.
But there is an alternative to hourly billing that lets you, the prospective client, and the lawyer work together without either feeling out of control when it comes to the services to be rendered and the fee to be paid for those services. That alternative is value-based billing.
Value-based billing uses a set fee for services to be performed at various stages of a case. In cases involving divorce or paternity, you can pay for services in stages, as your case develops. If additional services are required, then set fees for those services are also provided.
Value-based billing for legal services gets away from the traditional hourly billing. It provides a win-win for the client and the lawyer because both know what is expected of the other at every step of the case.
